Inquiry Process + Design Methods Section:
Culturally responsive teaching methods that I plan to incorporate during my long practicum include creating units and lessons that embrace a variety of cultures, a collection of appropriate teaching adaptations, and implement reflective and critical thinking in classes (Rehm & Allison, 2006). Using Thompson & Wheeler’s (2009) framework, I plan on learning the cultural background and experiences of the students I teach and implement research-based strategies that recognize the needs, strengths and experiences of students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Additionally, I will incorporate culturally relevant curriculum materials and instructional aides during my practicum.
To become a more culturally responsive teacher I need to be socioculturally conscious, I need students to see themselves as responsible for and capable of bringing about change to make schools more equitable, I need to get to know the lives of my students and I need to design instruction that builds on what my students already know while stretching them beyond the familiar (Villegas & Lucas, 2002).
